The European Safeguards Research And Development Association (ESARDA) is an association of European organisations formed to advance and harmonise research and development in the area of safeguards. It also provides a forum for the exchange of information and ideas between nuclear facility operators, safeguards authorities and persons engaged in research and development. ESARDA was formed in 1969 with the purpose of facilitating collaboration in R&D in the field of safeguards and in the application of such R&D to the safeguarding of source and special fissile materials.

The European Safeguards Research And Development Association (ESARDA) and the European Nuclear Education Network (ENEN) agreed to enhance their bilateral cooperation in the field of education and training in nuclear science and technology with the signing of an MoU in Vienna, Austria, on 22 October 2019.

The scope of the MoU comprises:

  • cooperation in advancing, promoting and improving the quality, effectiveness and efficiency of nuclear safeguards implementation in Europe and worldwide
  • promoting the collaboration through broad areas of cooperation, including: nuclear safeguards, nuclear material management, safeguards implementation, education and awareness raising, cooperation with the IAEA and the synergies between nuclear safeguards and security.
