The Technical University of Catalonia BarcelonaTech (UPC) Spain, is a public research and higher education institution that specialises in engineering, architecture and science, and one of the leading technical universities in Europe. It has almost 30,000 undergraduate students. Every year, 5,000 students graduate with bachelor’s or master’s degrees, and 270 with doctoral degrees. It is one of the top European universities for technology transfer and the top university in Spain for registered patents and the creation of spin-offs. It has collaboration agreements with more than 2,000 companies.
The UPC’s income for R&D activities and technology transfer is about 78 million euros.
It has 8 campuses in Catalonia and premises in 130 countries on five continents. It has been recognised by the Spanish Ministry of Education as an International Campus of Excellence for its projects Barcelona Knowledge Campus and Energy Campus.
Every year about 700 UPC students go abroad for exchanges of four months in average.
UPC has 10 schools, one of them is “Escola Tecnica Superior d’ Enginyers Industrials de Barcelona (ETSEIB), School of Engineering of Barcelona” founded in 1851. This school has 4.000 students and 300 lectures.
The general scope of nuclear engineering is to use the knowledge and scientific methodology to get the profit that for the man can supply the uses of fission and fusion nuclear energy and of the ionizing radiation.
Since 1963 to 1977 UPC-School Engineering of Barcelona develop his education and research activities in nuclear engineering with the support of a research and training reactor called ARGOS, (Argonaut Reactor), currently is decommissioned. Currently these activities are developed with several research laboratories, and education laboratories.
UPC has a PhD program on Nuclear Engineering and ionizing radiations.
UPC currently is developing the European Masters in Nuclear Energy (EMINE) 120 ECTS and the Master in Nuclear Engineering (MNE) 90 ECTS. These two masters shares the first year. These masters have students from Asia, Africa, America and Europe.
The research activities related to nuclear engineering are developed in the Department of Physics and Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Research Group (NERG) and in the Institute of Energy Technologies. Research Group on Studies in Energy and Radiation (GREENER).
The education and research activities related to nuclear engineering at UPC are developed by: 1 professor, 10 lectures, 8 PhD researches, and 16 PhD students.
The research topics are nuclear technology, nuclear safety, environmental impact, ionizing radiation technology, radiation protection, nuclear fusion, nuclear instrumentation, particle accelerators, thermal-hydraulics, radioactive waste,
non destructive evaluation, radon, dosimetry.
